St. George's Cathedral

St. George's Cathedral is one of the tallest free-standing wooden buildings in the world and a wonderful place to visit. Inside the church, every single object from furniture and chalices to memorial tablets and Baptism registers has a fascinating story to tell.

On a visit, one can not only delve into the history of Guyana but also enjoy a glimpse of its Caribbean neighbors. A small Gothic shrine of carved oak in the northern aisle commemorates Bishop Coleridge, the first Bishop of Barbados, who was responsible for British Guiana from 1826 to 1842.

Located on Church Street in Georgetown, this has been designated a National Monument. Stroll a few yards up the promenade from City Hall and you'll arrive at St. George's. The cathedral was designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield and was opened on 24 August 1892.

Visitors to the cathedral are fascinated by its immaculate Gothic arches, clustered columns and flying buttresses. The decorative stained glass windows, reflecting a myriad of colors in the sunlight, depict scenes from the Crucifixion and the Ascension, among others. The intricate ironwork feature pictures of birds and flowers. You'll be stunned by the artistically carved choir seats.
