The covered bridges of Madison County, Iowa

Around 20 covered bridges were built in Madison County during the late 19th Century. They were covered to to help preserve the large flooring timbers, which were more expensive to replace than the lumber used to cover the bridge sides and roof! Today only six of them are left. You can't afford to miss one!

Madison County was organized in 1849, and is named after James Madison, the fourth President of the United States. The picturesque terrain is dotted with numerous rivers and creeks. Madison county is also the birthplace of John Wayne. Be sure to take a trip to his home, which has been restored to its 1907 appearance with authentic furnishings. Guided tours are available from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm daily except on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's day.

The annual Covered Bridge Festival is one of the best times to visit the area. During this time, you'll see artisans demonstrating the old-fashioned ways, and booths are set up to feature the interesting crafts. Savor the lip smacking cuisine and enjoy nonstop music and entertainment!
